What is a ghost?

Re: Are there ghosts?
Almost certainly.

Ghosts are extinct hominins whose existence is only known from the traces left in Homo sapien genomes. Because our ancestors had sex with them.

Ghosts exist.

Re: Are there ghosts?
Given the number of smart-phones in circulation you'd expect recorded & shared (You Tube/Facebook) sightings to be in the millions - same with flying saucers, fairies & leprechauns*.

Either all are so common now that they are not even newsworthy, or...they simply do not exist.

If you are a philosophical Idealist instead of a materialist then they would be perfectly possible.

Re: Are there ghosts?
"Historically, certain toxic and psychoactive plants (such as datura and hyoscyamus niger), whose use has long been associated with necromancy and the underworld, have been shown to contain anticholinergic compounds that are pharmacologically linked to dementia (specifically DLB) as well as histological patterns of neurodegeneration.

Recent research has indicated that ghost sightings may be related to degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Common prescription medication and over-the-counter drugs (such as sleep aids) may also, in rare instances, cause ghost-like hallucinations, particularly zolpidem and diphenhydramine. Older reports linked carbon monoxide poisoning to ghost-like hallucinations."

(Wiki)

Also linked to failing eyesight - some people without dementia fill in the gaps in their vision with their imagination.

Re: Are there ghosts?
Yes; I've had multiple experiences. All but one feature my wife, who succumbed to cancer in 2013.

My first experience took place at my ex-wife's house when I visited our daughters, aged 5,8 and 10 at their 400 year old house near Loughborough.

I'd not visited before, and at 3am on night one there was a knock on the door of the room I was sleeping in. My head was under a pillow, so, having woken up and not being sure what I'd heard, I listened again. A second knock on the door. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up.

I got out of bed, and walked to the door, expecting to see my youngest walking down the lengthy corridor of the long thin house, back to her bedroom. I opened the door......two windows on the left hand side, old, leaded light windows, moon shining through. No-one there. Back to bed.

When Mum returned on Sunday, I told her what happened. This is what she explained.

Within the first 100 years of the house being built the owner of the house was unkind to his children, and the 18 year old female housekeeper took to protecting the children. The owner didn't like the interference, murdered her and her body was buried in the graveyard of the church opposite my ex-wife's house.

The visit on my first night at the house was the ghost of the housekeeper, checking to make sure I was a friendly male (to my 3 daughters) while staying at the house.

I had no further visits after that first night.

Re: Are there ghosts?
Ghosts as in dead spirits etc no. Poltergeists as in demonic possesion no.

However polergeist activity as in telekenisis yes. As I have had an experience of my own of an object appearing falling at my feet during the night. I believe a dusturbed mind can make objects move as is common with adolencent children A mate of mine.s wife left a house when she was a teenager due to the shit going on.

The object I was looking for was a suit carrier I'd been looking for all night. I had an important business trip the next morning and went to bed pissed off and disgruntled. 3am it appeared.

Ironically,

http://www.waspsparanormal.co.uk/

seems to be a ghost of a site, advertising events in July 2018.

Or maybe the ghost of the event is lingering after its time.
